We are often asked “What is VKAP and what do you do?” - So we wrote a little ‘Flyer’ here. Also, poke around https:/vkap.org or just give us a call.

KIN NAVIGATORS
HIGHLIGHTING our Kin Navigator program
Among the many things we do through our 24/7 warmline is help families find resources - connecting “our families” to the people, services, programs, funds, and so on - whatever may be able to ease the journey
Families taking care of family - especially the children - quickly discover the Kinship care means added complexity in finding what you need within any of the “systems” - such as support groups, filling forms, added transportation needs , special needs in education, legal issues often arise, unplanned financial demands, and even social life gets turned upside down.

VKAP: Your Partner in Kinship Care
Taking on the responsibility of raising a relative's or friend's child is a deeply rewarding, but often challenging, journey. Here at Vermont Kin as Parents (VKAP), we understand the unique joys and hurdles that kinship caregivers face. We're a grassroots organization, run by kinship caregivers for kinship caregivers, and we're here to provide the support, resources, and advocacy you need.
What We Offer:
We know that navigating the world of kinship care can be overwhelming. That's why VKAP offers a wide range of services, all designed to make your journey smoother:
A Listening Ear & Practical Advice: Sometimes, you just need someone who gets it. Our trained Kinship Navigators are available 24/7 via our warmline ((802) 871-5104). They offer emotional support, practical guidance, and can connect you with resources tailored to your specific situation. You can meet our staff on the website.
Information & Referrals: We're your one-stop shop for information on everything from legal options (like guardianship or conditional custody) to financial assistance programs (like Child-Only Reach Up or Medicaid). We'll help you understand the system and connect you with the right agencies and services. To explore details about the Kinship Options in Vermont, please navigate to that section in the main menu.
Support Groups: You're not alone! VKAP facilitates support groups throughout Vermont, both in-person and online. These groups provide a safe space to connect with other kinship caregivers, share experiences, and build a supportive community. Find a support group near you by visiting the "Support Groups" section of our website.
Respite Care: We understand that caregivers need a break. VKAP offers limited respite care grants to help cover the cost of temporary childcare, giving you a chance to recharge. Learn more about eligibility and how to apply under "Respite & Other Support" on our website.
Advocacy: VKAP is a strong voice for kinship families at the state level. We work to influence legislation and policies that impact kinship care, ensuring that your needs and the needs of the children you care for are heard.
Educational Opportunities VKAP helps families understand and navigate the different systems in which they may be involved, including courts, Department of Children and Families, mental health and substance abuse agencies.
Navigating the System:
The world of kinship care can involve many different systems – legal, educational, financial, and healthcare. The Kinship Caregivers Guide, which you can find on the website, is an amazing resource that outlines your options. It will help you ask yourself questions such as:
How long will the child be living with you?
What level of legal authority do you need to make decisions for the child?
What financial assistance is available?
What will court be like.
The guide walks you through the different types of kinship arrangements in Vermont, including:
Informal Arrangements
Minor Guardianship
Conditional Custody
Foster Care
Permanent Guardianship
Adoption
Refer to Chapter 2: Kinship Options for a thorough explanation of the topic.
We're Here for You
At VKAP, we believe that kinship families are a vital part of our community, providing loving and stable homes for children in need. We're committed to empowering you with the knowledge, resources, and support you need to thrive.
